STUDENT PROFILE – JAZZ TYRRIL-SMART
In 100 words or less, tell us something (or everything) about yourself.
My name is Jazz Tyrril-Smart and I have worked in the events industry for the past 11 years. Throughout my career I have gained extensive experience in event management and marketing with a variety of companies such as event management firms, associations, unique venues, corporate sector & government.
I am currently employed by QR (Queensland Rail) within the Corporate Events Department. Prior to this appointment I was the Manager of Marketing, Events & Projects for the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association 2004 – 2007.
In 2006 I co-founded event THIS, an event management company which focuses on producing quality events without the hefty price tag. This exciting adventure has proven successful with a large amount of bookings within the first few weeks of launching. One of the most cherished events I organised in 2007 was “Plant the Park Pink” a charity event for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. Eventually I would like to build this business up to be my full time role.
First event organised
Year 12 School Formal.
Most stressful event organised
My 8 day Destination Island Wedding in Vanuatu with an event on each day & post wedding party back in Australia – all the effort was worth it in the end!
Jazz’s Philosophy “It’s all about the details!”
My frank advice to anyone aspiring to be an event manager is to ensure they do not have the misconception that the events industry is full of glitz and glamour…. “You’re the first there, the last to leave and everything in-between is your responsibility.” If they can handle that, then the sky is the limit!
Why did you decide to obtain your Diploma in Event Management?
With no formal events education, I had heard about the Fast Track Diploma designed for people in the events field. I thought it was a fantastic way to get a piece of paper that recognises my previous experience.
This was the first time the course had been offered as a Fast Track Diploma via RPL - how did you find the course and the flexible approach?
I found the RPL (recognised prior learning) process very easy as I had a portfolio of all the events work I’ve completed since the start of my career. I actually RPL’d out of 37 subjects, leaving only 3 to complete.
The flexible delivery was great for me due to my heavy events schedule. Being able to have contact with my teacher one on one was brilliant.
What would be your ideal job in the events industry?
I am currently enjoying my role with QR however, eventually down the track would love to grow my event management business.
What is your 5 year plan for your career?
I’d like to continue my studies in the events area and have applied to Griffith University enrolling in the Post Graduate Program - Graduate Certificate/Masters of Business (Event Management).

Organiser Jazz Tyrril-Smart said the event had been inspired by family friend Veronica Macaulay-Cross. "Veronica lost her battle with secondary breast cancer earlier this year and we thought the best way to honour her memory was to keep raising awareness by supporting and remembering friends and family with breast cancer."

There are only 20 guests, but they are all going along for the holiday. So there is much to be arranged, including air travel, transfers, accommodation and sightseeing. "The site is a great way to keep everyone informed. There's visa, passport and tourist information, and they can get to know the [other guests] before they get to be friends," Tyrril says.
She is also keeping her girlfriends up to date by giving them access to an online photo album on Yahoo!7 360 (http://au.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/poppymontgumery/my_photos). There Tyrril posts photos of the dress, flower arrangements, groomsmen's attire and other items on which she may need advice.
"They even voted on my shoes!" she says. "They are close friends, their opinion counts."
Both brides say they intend keeping their sites going after the big day with event photos and future news. The company through which they arranged the sites, Special Memories Online (http://www.smonline.com.au), also has templates for new baby websites, not that they're planning to rush into it.
